How to Help Your Dancer Recover from Winter Illness

Winter is tough on little (and big) dancers. Between school germs, packed studios, and busy schedules, it’s not uncommon for dancers to catch a cold, feel run-down, or need a few days to reset.

The good news? A little extra care at home goes a long way in helping your dancer recover and return to class feeling strong.

Here’s how you can best support them during winter illness season.

1. Prioritize Rest and Sleep

When a dancer is sick or just getting over something, sleep is training. Rest allows the immune system to do its job, muscles to recover, and energy levels to rebuild. Missing one class is far more productive than pushing through exhaustion and prolonging illness for days.

If your dancer is:

  • Extra tired

  • Struggling to focus

  • Complaining of aches

  • Needing more sleep than usual

That’s your cue to let them rest guilt-free.

2. Hydration, Hydration, Hydration

Dancers lose fluids constantly through movement, even in the winter.

Encourage your dancer to:

  • Bring a full water bottle to every class

  • Sip consistently throughout the day (not just at the studio)

  • Add electrolytes if recommended by your pediatrician

Proper hydration supports recovery, energy, focus, and overall immune health.

3. Gentle Reminders About Hands & Faces

Studios are full of excited kids, and right now, lots of wiggly teeth are being proudly shown off 😉

A simple reminder goes a long way:

  • Avoid touching mouths and faces during class

  • Wash hands before and after dance

  • Carry a small, unscented hand sanitizer in their bag

(Unscented is key so it doesn’t irritate skin or bother other dancers.)

4. Know That Our Studio Is Taking Extra Precautions

We want families to feel reassured and confident in their child’s environment.

Please know that:

  • Studio floors, furniture, barres, and equipment are cleaned and disinfected regularly

  • Shared surfaces are sanitized so dancers are using clean equipment

  • We’ve been ventilating daily with fresh air to keep the space healthy

Your dancer’s safety and well-being are always a priority.

A Healthy Dancer Is a Strong Dancer

Winter illness happens even to the most dedicated dancers. With rest, hydration, gentle hygiene habits, and a supportive environment, dancers bounce back quickly and safely.

Thank you for helping us keep our studio healthy for everyone!
